**Belgian researcher detained in semiconductor espionage case**

7 September 2026

Belgian prosecutors detained a 52-year-old Belgian-Chinese former BelGaN researcher suspected of transferring gallium nitride semiconductor trade secrets to China. Investigators allege he simultaneously led a Chinese firm in a similar field, established shortly after he joined the Belgian chip company. The probe covers suspected industrial espionage, criminal-organization membership, misuse of company assets and unlawful disclosure of business secrets; a second suspect is also being pursued.

**China targets Japanese chipmaking gas**

7 September 2026

China’s Ministry of Commerce imposed provisional anti-dumping measures on Japanese imports of dichlorosilane, a specialty gas used to deposit thin films in semiconductor fabrication. The ministry’s preliminary ruling found that the imports were dumped and caused material injury to Chinese producers. Importers must lodge cash deposits with Chinese customs of 80.8% to 99.2%, depending on the supplier.finance.biggo+1

**Brussels targets China in procurement overhaul**

7 September 2026

The European Commission is preparing procurement reforms designed to reduce strategic dependence on third-country suppliers, with China the clear though unnamed target. The reforms would give greater weight to supply-chain resilience, critical infrastructure, security risks and foreign interference rather than focusing chiefly on the lowest price. They would also require scrutiny of unusually low bids and allow authorities to exclude suppliers unable to justify them, amid wider EU concerns over Chinese subsidies, market barriers and critical-mineral restrictions.

**Taiwan leverages chips for diplomacy**

7 September 2026

President Lai Ching-te said Taiwan’s chip industry rests on democracy and the rule of law, and that Taiwanese companies are expanding globally to create “shared prosperity.”

At SEMICON Taiwan, he presented the island as a dependable partner for the AI era, while Taiwan sought to share semiconductor benefits with like-minded countries.

The push comes as the United States and Europe press Taiwan to expand overseas chip production and investment, reflecting allies’ desire to secure AI-related supply chains.
